Why won’t your dogs sleep in their dog bed?

Our furry friends, depending on their age, breed, diet, activity etc. need a lot of hours of sleep per day and it is truly important to create a safe, comfortable and cozy space for them to rest. However, sometimes, despite our best efforts, our beloved pets do not want to sleep on their beds and choose the floor, sofa or any other place to relax instead. What may be the reasons for that?

While it may vary depending on your dog’s or cat’s personal preferences, among the most common reasons we can rate:

  • wrong size of bed – too small or too big
  • bed is too hard or too soft
  • bed is unstable – it slides on the floor
  • it smells unpleasantly or is damp
  • there is dirt, sand, straw, or meal leftovers that may discourage them from lying down
  • the lack of their favorite blanket, toy, or teether
  • holes, damage to the outer fabric, and poor quality of the bed may cause the dog to sleep on the floor rather than on the bedding
  • wrong placement – it is placed close to a boiler room, a radiator,
  • draught, cold or noise space, on the hallway or corridor.

So what can be done to make your pets want to sleep in their bed?

First of all, you should take care that it is safe and comfortable for your furry baby. The bedding should be in a quiet place, close to the rest of the family members, but in a place that is not exposed to constant movement and bustle.

Secondly, from the very beginning, it must be associated with comfort and safety, so it is a good solution to put their toy, chew, blanket or your T-shirt (which smell reminds them of you) in the bed. Also, do not remember to reward them every time they lie down in their bed – even though it lasted only a few minutes or seconds. Be calm, patient and caring.

The bed cannot be too hard nor too soft, as it may cause discomfort and even pain. Great options are MISSOGNO orthopedic pet beds with a layer of memory foam which has a wonderful ability to respond to your pet’s body temperature and weight, but primarily support joints and spine. It’s also important to consider whether your pet prefers to sleep curled up on the bed or stretched out with plenty of space. This will help you decide whether a round pet bed or a rectangular one is more suitable.

What is more, choose a pet bed which covers are easily removable and washableMISSOGNO beds may interest you because they are made of fabric that is resistant to dirt and the ingress of fur. In addition, they can be easily taken off and washed in the washing machine, thus ensuring hygienic conditions for your pet.

Remember, that your pet will always instinctively look for the most comfortable and safe place for itself. Therefore, if your dog or cat does not want to sleep in their pet bed, observe their behavior carefully to gradually eliminate all obstacles. Once you satisfy all their needs, they will certainly enjoy sleeping in their bed and will not need to be persuaded to sleep in there.
